PURPOSE – Reason for Living

We can define the word purpose as the reason for which something exists. For example, why does technology exists? It can be because people want to do things easier and lighter or others have it for entertainment and such. There are a lot of possible purposes that we can think of for something. But in our own lives, what is our purpose for living?

What will be our purpose in life? Have you ever asked yourself the question: “Do I have the right reason for living?” Some will say our purpose is to fulfill our dreams, to be happy, to reach or goals and ambition and more with worldly context.

“It is not about us. The purpose of our lives is Christ.” –Rick Warren

Out of all the purposes we put in our lives, if they are apart from Christ, we are just then living for ourselves. Living for God is the only purpose that will last for a lifetime. As we continue listening and obeying God’s voice, our purpose changes.

Eph. 2:10: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Prior to this verse, Eph. 2:8-9 says that only by grace you have been saved through faith. By this grace and by believing the gospel, we become Christians. And as this verse clearly shows that as Christians and as the light of this world, we are to do good works for Him as we are His ambassadors. We are ought to work and live for God alone and not for ourselves.

We then have a change of purpose in our lives. And this change in purpose results to a lot of changes in our own selves also.

1. Change in Passion. (Eph. 2:3-5) Before, we are fulfilling the world’s desire for us and our own desire for ourselves but because of the love of God which He has shown to us on the cross, we are now made alive in Christ Jesus. Because of that great love, we, the dead are made alive in Him.

2. Change in Direction. As we keep on listening to His voice, we gradually change the path we are taking. We star to do things according to His will and in His path we find out true purpose in living.

3. Change in Motivation. In our old self, we tend to do things for our own satisfaction and for others. We are motivated by the thought of receiving glory and honor in the end. But once we receive Christ, we have a change in reason for doing things. We are motivated to do good works because of God and all the glory and honor is His.

“You were born by His purpose and for His purpose.” –Rick Warren

To live a life of purpose is to live for the glory of God.
